In parts of Scotland, there was a belief that the birth of a black-faced sheep brought bad luck to the entire flock. This is the origin of the phrase “black sheep of the family.” Even more ominous, if a ewe gave birth to twins with both black faces, it was considered a sign of a poor lambing season ahead.
