Prohibited Substances

It is important that all competitors are aware of the rules concerning 'prohibited substances', as ultimately it is the rider's responsibility to ensure that their horse does not test positive when competing under rules.

The Jockey Club define a prohibited substance as 'any substance originating externally whether or not it is endogenous to the horse. This means that any substance that has been given to a horse in any way, including in its food, and that could have an effect on the horse, is prohibited' The following are prohibited under the Rules of Racing:
substances capable of acting at any time on one or more of the following mammalian body systems:

  • the nervous system
  • the cardiovascular system
  • the respiratory system
  • the digestive system
  • the urinary system
  • the reproductive system
  • the musculoskeletal system
  • the blood system
  • the immune system
  • the endocrine system
  • endocrine secretions and their synthetic counterparts

As the Jockey Club have identified the action of substances, rather than the specific substances themselves it is impossible to draw the line between normal feed items and substances which could affect performance.

Our Statement

Due to the vagueness of the Rules and different ways in which they can be interpreted, it is therefore almost impossible to offer a guarantee that our products will not contain any banned substances. Furthermore the FEI do not test or approve herbal or natural products, and state that 'a claim that the product does not violate the FEI rules or is undetectable by drug testing is the sole responsibility of the manufacture or individual making that claim.'

Brinicombe Equine does not use any ingredients which are considered as prohibited substances, and nor, to the best of their knowledge, has any product caused a positive drug test, or is ever likely to cause a positive drug test. Brinicombe Equine take extreme care when selecting and sourcing ingredients and during the manufacturing process, to prevent contamination.

The Denis Brinicombe Group, the parent company of Brinicombe Equine, are accredited with the Universal Feed Assurance Scheme (UFAS) and registered under the Feed Hygiene Regulations 183/2005 and the Animal Medicines Inspectorate (AMI), schemes which demonstrate the quality and standards of manufacturing employed by the company.
