Lucy Wiegersma: International Event Rider *Currently ranked 3rd in the FEI World*

With a background firmly rooted in horses our sponsored rider, Lucy Wiegersma, would inevitably find a career in equestrianism. What was not inevitable however, was the level of success she would achieve as three-day event rider.

Based at Warren Farm Lucy has a team of people aiding her ever broadening success not only in eventing but also in training and teaching.

Warren Farm is a prime grassland farm of 170 acres. Formerly a dairy unit, Warren Farm was converted to an all-equestrian enterprise when the Wiegersma family moved there in 2001. It is now an impressive set-up boasting a 60m x 40m outdoor school, fenced grass paddocks, all-weather turnout, lunge pen, horse walker and gallop.

Warren Farm is also home to Hatherleigh Horse Trials, a BE event which runs each August and has classes ranging from BE80 to Intermediate level. The XC fences and full set of show jumps are a much valued facility. They grow all their own hay and haylage on the farm and do most of their fittening work on the rolling Devon hills.

Regularly featuring amongst the top 5 riders in the FEI World Rankings, currently ranked 3rd, Lucy is the only rider to have won all three national titles, crowning her Junior and Young Rider Championship victories by becoming Senior British National Champion in 2006. Lucy can count Blenheim, Blair and Bramham amongst her three-day wins, and she narrowly missed out adding the Badminton title to her tally in 2008, when she finished second.

Lucy is a veteran of five European Championship teams at under 21 level, where her successes included individual and team medals. She was selected for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but after her horse went lame, Lucy had to wait a further year to make her senior squad debut at the European Championships in France.

Lucy’s outstanding talent and professionalism has been recognised and supported by the World Class Performance programme. She has nurtured and trained a string of young horses all with Championship medal-winning potential and is widely regarded as a rider tipped for the top.

Lucy also has an English degree from Exeter University and dabbles in the world of freelance journalism. She is a regular contributor to newspapers and magazines such as Horse & Hound, Eventing and the Western Morning News, where her dry humour and distinctive style have earned her a substantial following.
