Our sponsored rider, Amy Young, runs a family yard based in Durham. Her riding career started at a young age of five and by the age of eight knew she wanted to become a top event rider, quoting "getting riding lessons for my 5th birthday was the most expensive mistake my parents ever made!" Amy already has a long list of achievements to her riding career and has ambitions of representing her country at the highest level.
In both 2000 and 2001 Amy was short listed for the British Pony Team after which she made a successful transition from ponies to horses, qualifying for the Junior Regional Novice championships by winning both Northern sections. Riding her first horse, Highville, she finished seventh in that competition and went on to become the British under 18 Champion in 2003. In the same year, following first and third places at the Junior trials, Amy was selected to represent Great Britain at the Junior European Championships in Pardubice, Czech Republic.
In 2004 and 2005 Amy was short listed for the Young Rider Europeans, but missed out on both occasions due to injuries. But more than made up for this disappointment, by winning the British under 21 Championship title at Weston Park in 2005. In 2006 Highville was on top form, finishing fifth in Advanced at Withington Manor, tenth in the CIC*** at Chatsworth, and a fantastic third in the Under 25 Championship at Bramham CCI***.
It proved to be third time lucky when Amy finally represented Great Britain on the Young Rider European Team. At a very rainy competition in Pardubice she was the only rider to finish on their dressage score and won the individual title. Amy says "I was very proud to have helped the British Team to win Gold". After this in 2007/8 she was selected for the lottery funded World Class Start Programme.
Amy has had a progressive season with her horses this year, Mayflower is an 8yr old feisty grey mare who has made the step up to Intermediate, and completed her first International competition in the CCI* at Osberton. Master Step, owned by HorseyHotties.com director Ginny Rose, is a new addition to the yard and shows exciting potential for Intermediate and 2* events next year. Ruscai Horatio, owned by Sara Metcalfe of Foxberry Chasers, had a great season upgrading to Novice and topped the leader board twice! High on a Hill and Midget Gem have found loving new homes, and Who’s Cruise, an Advanced 10yr old liver chestnut who has been with Amy from a 4yr old, is currently in recovery from a life threatening condition. “It’s been a very difficult journey,” said Amy. “But hopefully we’re through the worst and I’ll be keeping everything crossed that he comes back to full strength next year.”
As well as taking in horses for schooling and competing, Amy has also had a number of event reports published in Eventing and Horse & Hound Magazine, writing a feature in Horse in 2009 on 'how to train the young horse'. Amy is keen in developing her skills as an equestrian journalist, so look out for Amy’s event reports this season.
