“Fly Control Special”

Q. We had cattle grazing last year and used TUB Fly with excellent results. They seemed far less irritated and more settled. How soon should we introduce it this year to give the maximum effect?
A. The active ingredients in the Repel-Ex™ repellent premix will take up to 21 days to work through the system. This often happens more quickly in consistently hot conditions as the animal naturally sweats more, which will help. The fly population can increase very quickly if the conditions are right so we would recommend that all animals are covered as soon as possible. Because the base product used for Tub FLY is a high specification performance tub, then stock will benefit from the very first lick whether flies are present or not.

Q. Two years ago we turned organic and last year we had a real fly problem. Can I use your Tubby products even if I am organic?
A. We have just recently added Tub Simply Green FLY to our range of Soil Association certified products, so this year you have a solution. The tub also contains minerals and trace elements as well as a large amount of seaweed meal which contributes significantly to the overall nutrient level. There is no derogation required because it is a certified product and they are 14 kg in size.

Q. I have read about your Bug-A-Tub. How many would I need for 300 sheep?
A. One of the keys to the success is correct coverage. One tub should be distributed amongst 25 head and this should last approximately one month. Bug-A-Tub has two active premixes. Repel-Ex™ copes with the fly challenge but we have also added Para-Guard™. This also works through the system but gives an extra punch to the fly deterrent as there is a fleece to cope with. The other benefit is that it also alters blood palatability so lice and ticks also find the animals’ environment hostile and will seek another host animal. It should be fed throughout high risk periods.

Q. We rent paddocks on a local farm for our three horses. Our landlord uses your fly products for his cattle and swears by them. Is there a version we can use for our horses?
A. Brinicombe Equine is our dedicated equestrian division and one of their flagship products is Think Fly. Unlike the ruminant version it is available either as a solid lick or in granule form to suit different feeding. We export it to many warmer climates such as Spain and Australia but our home UK market is particularly strong. The Equi-Clinic can be contacted on 08700 606206 or buy online at www.brinicombe-equine.co.uk
