Welcome to our August edition of the Monthly Mineral Clinic. We should now be used to the weather that we have been experiencing for much of July, but the hampering of harvest plans still remains frustrating. The Met Office are suggesting that things should improve from mid August onwards so with a bit of luck things can only get better. In the Mineral Clinic we are noticing that these prolonged wet summers are starting to have an effect on animal health. Please read on for the common problems we are hearing about......
Two years worth of lower quality silage and grazing has been causing havoc with cattle fertility. Many farmers are now finding that bulling is sluggish and the number of cows holding at first service greatly reduced. Once disease has been ruled out as the cause, nutrition has to be the next avenue to explore. Fro many years now farmers have relied upon our Quick Serve Granules or our Tub QS (Quick Serve) to help in situations such as these. The main active ingredient in both these products is Orvec Stimulus which helps to improve fertility, bulling and heat detection. The Orvec Stimulus is backed up with a very high specification mineral, trace element and vitamin package to ensure a healthy reproductive system.
Like last year, this year we have noticed a large increase in the incidence of tick nuisance in stock; this may be due to the moist conditions we have been experiencing. Bug-A-Tub was launched in 2007 to aid the reduction of tick and lice irritation, this is combined with a high specification vitamin & mineral inclusion as well as live Yeast-Ex which will improve feed efficiency snd conversion, helping to balance the summer grazing. We have noticed that Bug-A-Tub also has the added benefit of reducing the fly & midge nuisance, making it a fantastic product for all concerned about midge-borne diseases.
This wet, mild weather offers an ideal breeding ground for parasites, which opens stock up to a whole host of diseases, which can be prevented. Lungworm (Husk/Hoose) is the most common cause of coughing in grazing stock. This can lead to poor weight gain, and a high level of infection could lead stock to be susceptible to other respiratory diseases such as IBR (Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis), and a reduced feed intake could predispose them to conditions such as Displaced Abomasum. Nemlic is an easy to use self-feed liquid wormer which contains Panacur, and has been found to be particularly effective against Lungworm. Nemlic offers a non-labour intensive method to worming outlying stock.
Working with breeding stock can be a very rewarding but also frustrating business. But life is always made easier when solutions for problematic times are found. This is certainly the case with Tub EC (Easi-Calver) which was launched almost 3 years ago. Formulated to drip feed the unborn calf nutrients that will kick-in at birth to aid vigour and energy and to ensure cows muscles are well toned to promote a "wet", quick & easy calving. Reports from across the country show that Tub EC is now a trusted part of pre-calving cow nutrition.
